Our Match Report
This past weekend the Red's returned to Fort Adam in scenic Newport, Rhode Island for the return of the NERFU Cup. Between the weather and our pool times, Saturday could not have lined up any better. Up first was Boston RFC 2nd side at 9AM, it was a warm and foggy morning and the Red's came out hot as the fog burned off, punching holes through the gainline early and often. With limited subs, two yellow cards, the Red's dug deep to see off Boston 17-0 to open the tournament. After a short break, the Red's were back at it kicking off against Wolfhounds 2nd side at 10:40. It was quickly realized that the Wolfhounds were keen to play a more physical brand of rugby than we had in the opening match. The first 10 minutes were all Wolfhounds, getting up 10-0 quick. For the last 10 minutes and the entirety of the second half the Red's got back to the gritty playing we captured in the first match, keeping the Wolfhounds off the board for the final 30 minutes of the truncated match. Unfortunately, while the defense held strong, we couldn't quite get enough offensive mojo going, only able to get one across the whitewash. Match ended 10-5 Wolfhounds.
Wrapped up on the day by 11:30, the Red's enjoyed the beautiful afternoon at Fort Adams watching matches, and partaking in the local delicacy, "Narragansett Lager". By the end of the day, it would appear that we would have to take on Maccabis on Sunday, but it became apparent when they only had 5 on the roster for their Saturday game it would end in a forfeit, NERFU insisted we hold an on field boat race on Sunday, alas no Maccabis were available so it was NSRFC vs. the NERFU Board. Closely officialed by NERRS appointed match officials it ended in a tie, NSRFC was awarded 2 pts for the tie.
Off field highlight of the weekend, was watching Jeb and Hartigan take on a 12 word, word search as part of their kangaroo court punishment, time to completion was an astronomical 7 minutes 30 seconds.
