Our Match Report
The North Shore Reds hit the road to Joe Moakley Park in South Boston for their second match of the season against Old Gold. The boys came out of the gate hard and fast, putting their game strategy right to play. Though Old Gold was quick to catch on to the Pirate Ball scheme that effectively makes gaps out wide for the backs, the forwards’ ferocity seemed too much for Old Gold to handle.
Our man of the match, Tom Moore, locked down the scrum all day at prop even though it wasn’t his preferred position. A line out in the attacking end allowed the forwards to show off what they’ve been working on all week at practice. A designed Maul play where Tom peels off to set the ball for a swing out wide, but he was able to push through the defense for the Try himself. Jeff Long and Kevin Duffy also scored from the forwards to add to the lead.
Another notable performance by Tim Wilkinson who not only masterfully stopped any breakaways in the open field securing the shutout for the Reds, but also fielded and returned kicks in what was another wet and windy day for rugby. Timmy stunningly converted 8 of 10 kicks adding to the commanding lead.
The backs showed their prowess by scoring a combined 6 tries, with a pair for both Jeb and Sweet Lou, establishing themselves as possibly the best center pairing in the league. Sully also put one up after only mere minutes from the center position, coming off the bench at the half. Nate Mullins was able to get his second try in 2 weeks after a confusing series of events following a kick and chase out of bounds on the Old Gold 5 meter line. After knocking a quick thrown line-out, the ball rolled into the opposition try zone and Nate was able to touch an easy one down for the try. The boys thought he was awarded a penalty try for Old Gold playing the man off the ball, but Timmy was able to convert that kick as well.
Three Rookies earned their first ever start for the Reds today, Danny Mac at Lock, Josh Doty at Flanker, and Scotty Othello at wing. While all three made valuable contributions to the team, Josh was able to score his first try for North Shore today. No boots were available at the drink up - so pending the traditional chug for first tries scored. Shout out to our recruiting chair for the hard work in the off season making the North Shore bench deeper than its ever been.
