Our Match Report
This past weekend, your North Shore Reds traveled to Canton, MA to take on the Boston Irish Wolfhounds. With both teams coming off a win opening weekend, it was an opportunity for North Shore to knock off a playoff caliber opponent early in the season.
The match began with both teams trying to figure out each other’s defense. The Wolfhounds were able to open up the scoring in the 11th minute off of a North Shore penalty. Tim Wilkinson was able to tie the game with a penalty kick a few minutes later. The game was very physical throughout the first half. Tim Wilkinson was once again able to capitalize on a PK in the 25th minute. Unfortunately, a high tackle resulting in a penalty try would put the Reds down to 14 men for the remainder of the first half. Despite this, North Shore’s backline was able to find the try zone thanks to a Jeb Nicklas run. A successful conversion would leave the score 13-10 at half.
Coming out of halftime the Reds were jump started by a try off of a great step by Pecs Rinakama. The Hounds were able to capitalize off of hard runs of their own. Responding with two quick scores to regain the lead 22-18 midway through the second half. North Shore’s forward pack had trouble executing offensively in the first half, and needed to respond. The response came from a run from Josh Libelo, who broke the Hounds gain line and a scoring a try in the center. Tim Wilkinson once again slotted the conversion, and the Reds regained the lead 25-22. Libelo would also have a critical interception in the defensive end of the field. Stopping a Wolfhound drive while North Shore was on the back foot.
North Shores depth provided much needed fresh legs and made an immediate impact. Veteran James Sullivan came off the bench and scored, putting the Reds up two scores with twelve minutes to go. Flanker Carlos Aquino laid heavy hits and made hard runs to win the gain line in both sides of the ball. Brian Estabrook scored in the 72nd minute, off of a perfect two on one pass from Jeb Nicklas to extend the North Shore lead. The Wolfhounds scored off the ensuing kickoff to secure their bonus point in a loss.
Your North Shore Reds win 37-29. Back to work on Tuesday at Salem High @7:30 as we head into the bye week. Quite a start to the season but job isn’t done. UpShore!
