Our Match Report
Amoskeag provided our first test of the season and on a gorgeous New England afternoon the hunt for glory began. Having spent the last few weeks putting in fitness sessions and tweaking our systems the boys were ready to go from the whistle.
After a few minutes of playing through the opening day nerves, the Reds were able to put their first points on the board for the season from the boot of Tim “Golden Boot” Wilkinson. The first half was a back and forth affair, with some poor penalties given away by North Shore, eventually leaving us down to 14 men for 10 minutes, never less thanks to Chris “Dungeon Master” Robert and Joe “Cousin” Raimondi the Reds entered the sheds with a 17-15 lead.
The second half saw North Shore finding the try line with some more frequency with Jeb “Jeb” Nicklas visiting the promise land 3 times (humbly bragging that he shouldn't have to do a hat trick boot since it's his “5th or 6th hat trick”) Nate “Energizer Bunny” Mullins, and Peceli “Coach Pecs” Rinakama adding a try of their own to see North Shore finish their first 80 minute shift of the season with a 52-27 victory.
It was a great first step towards our ultimate goal of being the last team smiling come November. Glimmers of the expansive attacking rugby we're aiming for were on display at times, the forward pack was dominant at scrum time, and we welcomed back some familiar faces back into the fold. While there is plenty to work on anytime you come out of a match on the right side of the score line deserves a celebration which was hosted by Amoskeag at a bowling alley, a first in NERFU history (don't fact check that).
