Our Match Report

This past Saturday North Shore Rugby traveled down to Providence to for a highly anticipated match up of 1st place vs 2nd place in the standings. Keeping with the trend of tough playing conditions this season, North Shore showed up to a muddy, saturated Marvel Field. The Red's anticipated this to be another slow pace game, with possession dominated by the forwards.

The game kicked off and the first few minutes, as expected, consisted of tight crash pods from the big guys. After some back and forth Providence was able to dot down an unconverted try in the 5th minute. Soon after North Shore found themselves in striking distance, and fly-half Justin Melvin put a perfectly placed chip kick over the defense to Tim Wilkinson on the outside, who gathered it in for a try, which he also converted.

The remainder of the first half was competitive, and started to get very chippy. The muddy conditions catered to sloppy breakdowns, and there seemed to be some extra curricular activity after every stoppage. Living up to the hype the first half was a lot of back and forth play. Unfortunately, Providence capitalized on a few penalties and lose ball opportunities, and was able to score a couple more before the half time whistle. Half Time Score: Prov.-17 to NS-7.

In the second half, Providence aimed to test the North Shore back three early on with some kicking. keeping their composure Nick, Tommy, and Byron handled each attempt perfectly, making smart decisions, and regaining possession. Along with this, the set pieces were owned by North Shore, proving that proper technique wins over size.

Providence eventually went back to their plan of hammering crash after crash, and it was effective. Though they were out sized, the North Shore defense pressured the ball well and made some great tackles. However, they were not able to force the turnovers, and Providence capitalized, scoring a flurry of tries late in the second. Unfortunately, the score line did not tell the story on this one, as the game was never dominated by either team. Full Time Score: Prov.-41 to NS-7.

This was a hard fought match by North Shore, and it can be looked at as a great learning opportunity going into the final crucial match against Burlington.

Men of the Match:
Forwards - Sean Mahoney, stepping up big at 8-man and running people over, per usual.
Backs - James "Sully" Sullivan, big runs when they were needed, and keeping ball in hand.

Onto next week, Upshore!
