Reds are New York-bound for Final Four playoffs this weekend
DANVERS - The North Shore Reds of the New England Rugby Football Union (5-1, second place Division 3, and 1-0 playoffs) defeated South Buffalo RFC in the 2009 Senior Man NRU (Northeast Rugby Union) quarterfinals, 29-22 at Pine Banks in Malden Nov. 14.
The Reds are now off to Randall Island in New York this weekend to play in the Northeast Final Four, first against North Jersey RFC, the Metropolitan New York champions, in the semifinals Saturday. If the Reds win, they will take on the victor of the Boston Irish Wolfhounds/Buffalo RFC match Sunday in the finals. Then, it's off to the Sweet 16 for the national championship next spring.

After months of hard work, and a nearly flawless fall season, the NSRFC took second place in New England Rugby Men's Division 3. For the first time in team history, we had a chance for post-season matches. Despite awful weather and a last minute change of venue, the NSRFC defeated South Buffalo 29-22, in a hard fought NRU semifinal match.
Therefore, we will travel to Randall's Island, New York, NY to play Metropolitan New York's 2009 Division III champions, North Jersey. Kick-off is 11am on Saturday. A win means an 11am kick-off on Sunday, a loss means 12:30pm kick-off. Our second opponent will be either the winner or loser of the match between the Boston Irish Wolfhounds and Buffalo.
This is an official post-season match, which means check-in with picture ID for all CIPPed players on the roster will occur 90 minutes prior to kick-off. Plan to arrive at the pitch by 9am on Saturday to find parking and make your way to the field. There was a lot of construction going on and a general lack of signage when we were there this past spring.

The NSRFC recently unveiled its new jerseys in an event held at co-sponsor Texas Roadhouse in Danvers. Thanks also to Smithwicks and Seaboard Products Company for their support, and the Danvers Herald covering the story.
An enthusiastic, committed turn out by kids and parents alike made the camp a runaway success. And to top it off, the first ever North Shore “Trailblazers” Youth Rugby team ran in twenty tries while conceding only nine in four games, at the Fourth Annual New England Youth Rugby Jamboree at Mystic River RFC, Malden. This is a tournament which emphasizes fair play and open running rugby in a “no trophy competition”, and was thoroughly enjoyable for all who particpated - coaches, parents, referees, and the excellent young players!
Thanks to Dean & Marie Murphy for taking lots of photos at the Jamboree. Thanks also to the Town of Danvers Recreation Department for allow us to train in Plains Park.
Thank you and congratulations to all who ran or helped with our innaugural road race on July 11th, 2009. We hope you'll all join us again next year.
The official results are available here on the New England Runner website, and some pictures from the day are available here. If anyone would like a larger version, please contact us. Additional photos are available from Jim Rhoades.
